Seu Jorge at S.O.B.s, Monday June 13th
So, Seu Jorge's been known to hang around some of the hot spots of New York (with none other than my good friend, DJ Greg Caz, as you can see in the photo above), but now we'll finally get the chance to see him perform.
He's coming to S.O.B.'s on Monday, June 13th and tickets are on sale now.
Here's the details from S.O.B.'s website:
Seu Jorge (Mister Jorge), a 32-year-old Brazilian, is an elegant, stylish man, the kind to stand out in the middle of a crowd. A big star in Brazil for several years, first he led the group Farofa Carioca, whose infectious, groovy pop samba quickly became popular in Rio. Then his starpower grew after he cracked the big screen as well. Legends like Jorge Ben and Caetano Veloso have praised his work.
Seu Jorge has charisma...whether he's acting on the screen or singing and playing his guitar. His voice wanders in Portuguese between the growly quality of Sly Stone and the smooth crooning of Lou Rawls.
He played the ruthless slum mobster, Knockout Ned, in the 2002 hit, "City of God." Jorge had extensive personal experience of the world depicted in the film. His childhood in the favelas of Rio left him with a formidable tenacity and a political commitment that has lasted to this day. He lived on the street and taught himself to play guitar, doing odd jobs to scrape a living. But then he was taken on by a theatre company and, through acting, exorcised the ghosts of his past once and for all.
Back to music--he began a solo career with an album produced by Mario Caldato (Beastie Boys): "Samba Esporte Fino". Released to critical acclaim, it became the 1999 album of the year in Brazil. But it was the cinema and Fernando Meirelles that really made Seu Jorge a household name: his tailored role in "Cidade de Deus" (City of God) rocketed him to national stardom.
Not content with his newfound celebrity in Brazil, in winter 2004, he worked on "The Life Aquatic", directed by Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums), starring Bill Murray, Angelica Houston and Willem Dafoe. The film features Jorge's lovely Portuguese versions of classic David Bowie tunes, which have had a rapturous reception. The critical praise lavished on the soundtrack has significantly raised his profile in the U.S. Now experience him live in a solo intimate setting.
You can buy tickets through Ticketmaster or the S.O.B.'s box office. I'll see you guys there.
